Sable Trust is committed
to the stability of the Island, as well as the protection of all plant
and animal life, both on the Island and in the surrounding marine
environment. We are guided in our conservation activities by the Sable
Island Conservation Plan.
"Before" and "after" pictures
of road repairs carried out in the spring of 2005 at West Light
on Sable Island show that the road was filled and leveled and a
pallet fence constructed to preserve the western edge. The Trust's
fundraising efforts successfully raised enough money to finance
this much needed restoration project. Although an Environmental
Review process and heavy rains delayed the start of the project,
road repairs were completed in May2005.
In 2004 the Trust developed a conservation plan
for Sable Island that builds upon Environment Canada's 1998 Conservation
Strategy for Sable Island. The plan reinforces the strategie's
recommendations while adding specific detail and concrete measures
in the following areas:
Access and activities on Sable Island are administered
by the Canadian Coast Guard on behalf of the Government of Canada,
pursuant to the Sable Island Regulations of the Canada Shipping
Act. Except for emergencies, no person is allowed to land on the
island without permission from the Director of Marine Programs,
Canadian Coast Guard.
